  • Version 4.0 introduced support of certain CSS1 elements, minimal dynamic font support and the proprietary object element. This version was quite successful despite the competition from Internet Explorer 4.0 and problems from the outdated browser core.
  • Version 4.5 was released in October 1998. This version contained functionality improvements. A month later after the release of 4.5 the Netscape Communications Corporation was bought by AOL.
  • Version 5.0 was cancelled as they wanted to develop a completely new program from scratch.
  • Version 6.0 was released in 2000 and the code was based off of the Mozilla web browser. When released 6.0 flopped badly as it was not ready to release and was based on Mozilla 0.6.
  • Version 7.0 was based off of Mozilla 1.0.1 and released in August 2002.
  • In 2003 AOL closed down the Netscape division and laid off workers, Netscape was to still be developed "in house" which meant improvements would be minimal.
  • Version 8.1.3 was released on April 2nd, 2007 which included general bug fixes that were identified in versions 8.0-8.1.2.
  • Version 9.0 was released on October 15th, 2007. New features in this version were newsfeed support and become more integrated with the propeller internet portal, it also was able to be available to muliple Operating Systems such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.
